Khamzat “Borz” Chimaev is a 26-year-old emerging champion who was born on May 1, 1994 in Chechnya, a republic of the Russian Federation. Growing up across the street from a wrestling club, Chimaev first laid on a wrestling mat when he was just a year old. By the time he was 5 years old, Chimaev had begun his training to become a world class athlete.
As a wrestler, Chimaev progressed quickly and represented his country on their national team. In 2011 however, Chimaev made the decision to leave his native country and move to Sweden, where his skills excelled to new levels. In 2018, the fighter competed in the Swedish Championship in both the welterweight and middleweight divisions. With a stunning record of 10-0, 10-0, 10-0 in the tournament, and 7-0 in the final, Chimaev won gold without dropping a single point.
Chimaev’s dominance in the Swedish Championship caught the attention of Brave Combat Federation, the largest mixed martial arts organization in the Middle East. Chimaev’s professional MMA debut occurred on May 26, 2018, in a fight against Gard Olve Sagen, which the Swede won through a technical knockout (TKO) in the second round. Over the next two years fighting with Brave, Chimaev accumulated an impressive record of 6-0, securing himself as one of the most formidable Welterweights in all of Europe.
On July 8, 2020, a rumor spread that Chimaev would be fighting in the UFC’s middleweight division against the Welshman John Philips in just one week. While most fighters train for months to prepare for events like these, Chimaev confirmed that he had signed with the UFC, a mere 6 days before the fight. In Chimaev’s first UFC fight of his career, the Swede landed a total of 124 strikes before Philips submitted in the second round, while Philips himself landed only 2.
The week following Chimaev’s and Philips’s fight, Chimaev re-entered the octagon, this time, in the welterweight division to face Northern Irishman Rhys McKee. After landing 68 strikes, 40 of them considered significant strikes, Chimaev defeated his opponent in just 3 minutes and 9 seconds by TKO before McKee could land a single blow. With this achievement, the Swede fighter broke the UFC’s record for fastest time between wins with two victories in 10 days. With his final stroke statistics finishing at 192-2 after 2 matches, it is clear that Khamzat Chimaev is a new force to be reckoned with in the UFC.
